WHY HOME MAINTAINENCE IS IMPORTANT

dog grooming in the Swadlincote area

Heavy Matting

At MUTZZ NUTZ we use the finest quality shampoos & conditioners that are SOAP &DETERGENT FREE but still being effective in removing grease & tar (& odour).

We use hypo-allergenic products for dry, itchy skin, that is tearless with a mild pH formula, containing Jojoba oil, aloe vera, wheat protein and vitamins A ,D & E.They are kind & gentle on sensitive skins (even puppies).

Even the flea shampoo contains natural ingredients that bugs naturally hate, like Tea Tree oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Cedar Oil, Coconut oil,Jojoba, Aloe Vera, D'Limone & Neem oil.

Colour enhancing products we use are also based on similar natural ingredients but include extracts of fruits such as Strawberry, Avocado and Cranberry etc.

We will choose the appropriate shampoo to suit the skin & coat of your dog BUT if at anytime you prefer us to use anything else please just ask us!

Depending on the breed coat type, we will use a 'leave-in' conditioner, formulated with essential oils & ingredients, that will help to ease out matts during grooming and help prevent their re-occurrence, increase coat manageability and help prevent coat breakage, enhance body and condition, and leave a shine!

Ear & Nails etc.

In some breeds, plucking or trimming of ear hair is necessary for good ear health. Poor air circulation & wax build up can cause ear problems especially in drop ear breeds. Dogs with excessively matted ears can be candidates for hematoma type swellings. When the ear has been encased in hard mats for a long period of time, the circulation could be affected. Once the mat is shaved off and the circulation returns it can, in a small number of cases create a swelling. The dog usually reacts by violently shaking & scratching his head.

If ears smell there could be an underlying problem, so vet's advice should always be sought. We clean & check the ears during dog groomong and we always recommend you visit the vet if we suspect there is a problem.

Nails are also checked during the dog grooming and trimmed if they are too long.

The blood supply to the dog's nail is called the "quick". If your dog's nails are too long and you immediately cut to the length you think they should be, you will cut into the quick and cause your dog's nail to bleed. Don't worry, you won't have mortally wounded Fido, but the nail can bleed for quite some time and be rather messy. Most people keep some styptic powder (available at pet stores) on hand to cauterize the bleeding if necessary.

The trick to trimming dog toenails is to train the quick to retreat backward. Remember, simply cutting a large chunk of the dog's nail will only cause the nail to bleed. Instead, use the following method to avoid cutting the quick.
Cut or file the dog's nails only a little bit every couple of days. This will cause the blood supply to get shorter at the same time as the nail is being shortened. When you get the nail to the length you would like to maintain, clip every few weeks or as often as necessary to maintain that length. This will prevent the quick from growing too long and prevent the nail from bleeding.

Anal glands are a specialist area(!) and are best dealt with by your Vet.
